PAC-12 Football Notes

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State picked up one of its biggest wins under coach Herm Edwards when the Sun Devils knocked off UCLA on the road. The Sun Devils only had a short time to savor it. Up next is a physical Stanford team that’s coming off a big win of its own. Stanford knocked off Oregon in overtime. It was the Cardinal’s third win over an AP Top 25 team this season and their fifth over a top-5 team under coach David Shaw.

UNDATED (AP) — Stanford plays at No. 22 Arizona State in the Pac-12’s top game this week. Both teams are coming off impressive wins. The Cardinal scored the tying touchdown on an untimed play on their way to beating No. 8 Oregon 31-24 in overtime. The Sun Devils picked up one of their best wins under coach Herm Edwards, knocking off then-No. 20 UCLA 42-23. Oregon State plays at Washington State, Utah is at USC, and UCLA plays at Arizona in a light slate in the Pac-12.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham is trying to help his players deal with the loss of a teammate for the second time in less than a year. Whittingham hopes the Utes can find some solace on the field when they play at Southern California on Saturday, their first game since safety Aaron Lowe was killed in a shooting at a postgame party. Lowe was shot on Sept. 26, hours after Utah defeated Washington State and nine months after running back Ty Jordan died of an accidental gunshot wound to the abdomen on Christmas night 2020.

UNDATED (AP) — Oregon State is bringing its ground-pounding offense to Washington State, where the Cougars hope their defense can keep the game within reach. Oregon State has won four straight games and sits on top of the Pac-12 North. But coach Jonathan Smith isn’t expecting his team to be overconfident. He says the Beavers know it is hard to win a game in the Pac-12. The Beavers lead the Pac-12 in scoring with an average of 36 points per game. The Cougars are 10th in the league with an average of just 23 points per game. The Cougars are coming off a sterling defensive effort in a 21-6 win at California.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — UCLA has a chance to bounce back from its second loss of the season against a team that hasn’t won since 2019. The Bruins aren’t about to take Arizona lightly. The Wildcats may be on a school-record 16-game losing streak but they showed against Oregon that they can hang with just about anyone. Arizona trailed by 17 early but pulled within four points before eventually losing to Oregon. The Bruins are coming off a disappointing loss to Arizona State.
