Virtual town hall hosted by Tax Structure Workgroup on Wednesday, Sept. 29

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

You are invited to participate in a virtual town hall hosted by the Tax Structure Work Group taking place Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Tax Structure Workgroup was created in 2017 “to identify options to make the Washington state tax code more equitable, adequate, stable and transparent.”

As you may already know, despite the economic impact of the pandemic, our state’s tax revenue forecast has remained strong. In fact, the Economic and Revenue Forecast Council announced in September a continuing trend of robust tax revenue collections. There is simply no good reason to increase taxes.

And yet, in spite of this extraordinary tax revenue growth, several tax increases have been approved over the last few years by the majority party, including a new income tax on capital gains.

In May, the Tax Structure Work Group released six tax “scenarios,” including a plan to implement a personal income tax. These tax proposals will be presented and discussed during the town halls.

If you are concerned about an income tax or want to discuss the need for tax relief, now is your opportunity to do so; the Tax Structure Work Group is looking for input from taxpayers. Two sessions will be offered for our region. Information and registration links are below:
