SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — A top Miami-Dade fire official says demolition of the unstable remainder of a partially collapsed condo building in South Florida could come sooner than first estimated. Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah told relatives of those missing in the rubble that the structure could come down as early as Sunday night. He had initially estimated Monday at the earliest. Officials have warned that the still-standing portion of the tower in Surfside faces a heightened risk of failure in an approaching storm. They suspended rescue operations on Saturday to let workers begin the precarious business of boring holes for explosives into the concrete.
