“Fermenting” dead whale on Swedish shores has local officials telling residents to stay away

If there’s a dead whale slowly swelling up on the beach, there’s a very strong reason why you should not go anywhere near the smelly thing.

Euro News reports that a Swedish Island is dealing with a stinky yet interesting conundrum — a dead whale has been resting on its shores for about a week and its corpse is starting to get bigger.

The humpback whale carcass is located by Mörbylånga — a small Swedish town — where locals are being cautioned not to go near the massive dead body no matter how tempting it may be.

Basically, that carcass is slowly filling with gasses and local officials basically told residents that the whale could blow at any moment.

According to the town municipality, they told residents, “At the moment the whale is fermenting due to the decomposition process and may explode. These are great forces that should not be ignored.”

So, until the whale deflates or erupts like a volcano, locals are urged to not go near the dead mammal  “under any circumstances.”

In the meantime, authorities are trying to figure out if they can solve their whale problem by themselves.

Here’s hoping they don’t take a page from the Florence, Oregon playbook — where a dead whale washed up on their beach in November 1970 and, to get rid of the whale stink, authorities chose to blow the whale carcass up with dynamite.

Cue flaming whale blubber falling from the sky and, 51-years later, you can visit the hallowed grounds now known as Exploding Whale Memorial Park.
