55 years after The Flintstones aired its final episode, the beloved Stone Age family is making its grand return to television.
Deadline reports that Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks is spearheading the animated comedy’s revival — called Bedrock — which will serve more as a continuation of the popular series. She will also be voicing the adorable Pebbles in the animated comedy slated to premiere on Fox.
A synopsis of the upcoming series, billed as an animated adult comedy, was provided by Warner Bros. Animation.
“Bedrock will follow the Flintstone family two decades after the original, with Fred on the brink of retirement and 20-something Pebbles embarking on her own career,” the summery reads. “As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club.”
DC Super Hero Girls and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous writer Lindsay Kerns will pen the pilot.
The Flintstones, a Hanna-Barbera Productions cartoon, ran for six seasons between 1960 and 1966 on ABC. The Emmy-nominated series inspired a slew of spinoffs and revivals over the years, including the popular 1994 live-action movie The Flintstones starring John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis and Rosie O’Donnell.
Bedrock has reportedly spent years in the making as part of Banks’ Brownstone Productions. It is currently unknown when the series is expected to premiere and who will be voicing the rest of the characters.
