Due to the announcement from the U.S. CDC and FDA this morning the Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Clinic scheduled for Thursday April 15, 2021 has been canceled. This is out of an abundance of caution as they review six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in women ages 18-48 after vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. If you have concerns about the vaccine your recently received please contact your doctor’s office directly with questions. If you have made an appointment for this Thursday you will be contacted directly to schedule for the next available clinic. At this time we do not know when we will be able to schedule another clinic or what type of vaccine we would be administering. In the mean time we will continue to distribute Moderna vaccine to our local partners.
On April 19 all people who are 16 and older will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccination in Hood River County. The Pfizer-BioNTech is the only vaccine that is authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for those age 16 and 17 years old. One Community Health is planning clinics at the School-Based Health Center located within Hood River Valley High School. There are no dates for this Pfizer Clinic yet. We are waiting for confirmation from the Oregon Health Authority if and when we will receive a Pfizer allotment. Planning for clinics with schools and providers is ongoing. More information will come.
We are seeing what will be a fourth wave of Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations locally, statewide as well as nationally. We are seeing a significant increase in cases associated with local schools. The large number of potential contacts in schools increases our contact tracing work exponentially. It is vital if we are to keep the schools open for parents to keep their kids home when they are not feeling well! We have seen local cases increasing indicating the virus is still circulating in our community and now that they are back in session, in our schools. Remember the vaccines are not perfect, assuming 95% efficacy, approximately 1/20 vaccinated people can still get COVID-19 and/or be asymptomatic carriers/spreaders. We’ve already seen this in Oregon. It is vital to keep taking protective measures to keep yourselves, your families, coworkers, loved ones, friends and communities safe and healthy. Stay home if you are not feeling well!
