PORTLAND, Ore. – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt released the following statement after the House Judiciary Committee of the Oregon Legislature voted out of committee a historic package of policing bills that take a tremendous step in reimagining policing in Oregon.
“I applaud the Oregon legislature for honoring and responding to the community’s demand for deep and transformative change in the relationship between law enforcement and the community they serve. This bipartisan legislation will make for a safer, fairer Oregon,” said District Attorney Mike Schmidt.
This package of bills, which covers a range of topics from the arbitration of labor disputes, the identification of officers and the use of munitions like kinetic impact projectiles and tear gas, represents a powerful response to community demands for change in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd.
Included in the package of bills are House Bills 2162, HB 2513, HB 2928, HB 2929, HB 2930, HB 2932, HB 2936, HB 3059, HB 3145, and HB 3355.
