PORTLAND, Ore. – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt released the following statement regarding events that occurred in the Pearl District during the evening hours of Friday March 12, 2021
“As District Attorney, I continue to prioritize the limited resources of my office on those engaged in violence and property destruction. We will independently review and evaluate each case as police reports are completed and submitted. The issue of mass detention by police to identify individuals and to investigate a potential crime may result in future litigation. As some of the cases from Friday night involve mass detention, it is prudent that we not comment any further,” said District Attorney Mike Schmidt.
Of the 13 arrests made on Friday, two were referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office for review on March 15, 2021. Ten of the 13 cases were criminal citations in lieu of jail booking. We expect the receive, and then review, those police reports within 2-3 weeks. One of the cases is a juvenile matter and the District Attorney’s office is prohibited from commenting on that case.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office prioritizes the prosecution of crimes that endanger life safety and crimes involving property destruction, and reviews all felony and misdemeanor criminal cases that are referred by law enforcement. These misdemeanor crimes, among others, include Attempted Assaulting a Public Safety Officer, Interfering with a Peace or Public Safety Officer, Resisting Arrest and Disorderly Conduct.
No additional information can be released by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office at this time.
A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Connel is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
