World watches US chaos with shock, dismay and some mockery

PARIS (AP) — From government officials to ordinary voters, the world watched as the U.S. Capitol was stormed by an armed mob of President Donald Trump’s supporters, and they wondered about the stress on their own political systems. A 39-year-old woman who works for an American company in India said that if it could happen in the U.S., it could happen anywhere. German Chancellor Angela Merkel noted that both winners and losers in elections must behave with decency and responsibility “so that democracy itself remains the winner.” There was glee and mockery from those who have long resented what has been seen as the U.S. tendency to chastise other countries for less-than-perfect adherence to democratic ideals.
