8/08 3:00 pm Update: Microwave Tower Fire in Mosier

8/08 3:00 pm update:

*This will be the last daily update for the Microwave Tower Fire*

Size: 1,313 acres
Start Date: July 22, 2024
Cause: Undetermined
Location: 5 miles west of Mosier, OR
Containment: 89%
Fuels: Brush, timber, and grass

*This will be the last daily update for the Microwave Tower Fire*

Highlights:

Crews are monitoring the few remaining smoldering hotspots within the interior. Smoke may be visible from Interstate 84. No perimeter growth has been observed. For questions or concerns about the fire or smoke, please call the fire information line at 541-208-1744.

Operations:

Interior smoke may increase within the interior of the fire as temperatures continue to rise and low relative humidities remain. As vegetation burns, it can break loose, roll downhill and ignite additional material. This is most likely to occur along the steep northern section of the fire. Crews continue to monitor and extinguish hot spots where access is possible. This work is being done by hand as well as by utilizing hose lays and sprinklers.

Crews will continue to focus on suppression repair throughout the day. Work includes repairing hand and dozer lines, roads and trails that were used during firefighting activities. Disturbed areas will be returned to a more natural state, allowing for faster revegetation. The public is reminded to respect closure areas to allow firefighters to work safely.

Fire Behavior and Weather:

Breezy, sunny and warmer weather is expected today. A ridge of high pressure will build later in the week to bring warmer temperatures and dry conditions.

Microwave Tower Fire Daily Update, August 7, 2024

Size: 1,313 acres
Start Date: July 22, 2024
Cause: Undetermined
Location: 5 miles west of Mosier, OR
Containment: 89%
Fuels: Brush, timber, and grass

Highlights:

Pockets of vegetation and debris continue to burn within the fire’s perimeter, producing smoke which may be visible while traveling on Interstate 84. Please use caution when venturing along this area. No perimeter growth has been observed. For questions or concerns about the fire or smoke, please call the fire information line at 541-208-1744.

Operations:

Rising temperatures coupled with low relative humidities may contribute to a slight increase in fire activity within the interior of the fire. Along the steep northern section, as vegetation burns it can break loose, roll downhill and ignite additional material. This has been occurring within the fire’s perimeter and crews are monitoring and extinguishing hot spots where accessible by hand or utilizing a system of hose lays and sprinklers.

Crews will continue to patrol and mop-up uncontained fire lines to secure the edge. Fire crews continue to repair damages and minimize potential soil erosion and other impacts resulting from firefighting activities. These activities repair the hand and dozer lines, roads, and trails used during firefighting activities to return disturbed areas to a more natural state. Please stay out of these areas as it impedes firefighters ability to do their work.

Fire Behavior and Weather:

Breezy, sunny and warmer weather is expected today. A ridge of high pressure will build later in the week to bring warmer temperatures and dry conditions.

Microwave Tower Fire Daily Update: August 5, 2024

Size: 1,311 acres
Containment: 89%
Fuels: Brush, timber, and grass

Highlights:

An afternoon flight was conducted utilizing Infrared, a heat detection system used to determine the extent of heat signatures on the fire. This information allows firefighters to find areas where hot spots are located, and additional mop up is needed. The observed fire behavior was minimal with no perimeter growth.

Operations:

Interior pockets of fuel continue to burn. During the day they will produce smoke, and at night can provide a visible glow, noticeable from across the river. Along the steep northern edge, roll-out of hot debris is a concern and sprinkler systems were installed to provide continuous water to reduce hot spots. Day and nighttime crews patrolled the fire perimeter to ensure the lines were secure. Suppression repair is occurring along trails and roads to reduce erosion and return disturbed areas to a more natural state.

Crews will continue suppression repair work and patrolling the fire perimeter for hot spots. Tonight, will be the last shift for night patrol. The patrol of the fire will resume in the morning.

Fire Behavior and Weather:

Moisture from recent rain was limited and vegetation remains dry. An onshore westerly flow will continue with hot temperatures. Drivers are asked to please use caution on Interstate 84 as firefighters are still working in the area. Persistent west winds are dispersing smoke from the Whisky Creek Fire into this area.

Size: 1,311 acres Start Date: July 22, 2024
Cause: Undetermined Location: 5 miles west of Mosier, OR
Containment: 84% Fuels: Brush, timber, and grass

Highlights:

The Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 2, led by Incident Commander Scott Schuster, assumed command of the Microwave Tower Fire today, August 4, 2024, at 6 a.m. Fire operations assessed the fire by air and reported minimal fire activity.

Operations:

The hot spots identified during the aerial reconnaissance were smoldering stumps and vegetation within the fire’s interior, and away from the fire perimeter. Located in inaccessible areas with steep rocky terrain, these hot spots are expected to burn out. Crews patrolled the perimeter to strengthen and secure firelines.

Today, engine crews will continue to patrol the fire’s perimeter looking for smoke and mopping up accessible hot spots. Suppression repair will begin along fire lines to reduce erosion and return disturbed areas to as natural condition as possible. Resources have also been identified to support the local unit with initial attack of any new fires.

Fire Behavior and Weather:

Clear skies return with northwesterly winds. Temperatures remain hot and forest vegetation is dry. Isolated interior pockets of unburnt fuel will produce visible smoke as consumed. Drivers are asked to please use caution on Interstate 84 as firefighters are still working in the area.

Firefighters continued mopping up along the fire line and were able to increase containment to 84%.

Operations:

Yesterday, crews monitored and patrolled the fire’s perimeter. Along the southern line, engine crews mopped up an interior hot spot burning in mixed conifer fuel type. On the northwestern line, terrain is steep with rolling rocks and debris hazards. Hand crews mopped up as needed and where safety permitted. The fire line was improved along the northeastern edge of the fire.

Today, crews will continue to monitor the entire fire’s perimeter to ensure continued security of lines, extinguish hot spots where accessible, and work to increase containment from Old Hwy 30 to I-84.

Size: 1,311 Acres
Start date: July 22, 2024
Cause : To Be Determined
Location: 5 miles west of Mosier, OR
Contention: 53%
Fuels: Bushes, wood debris and grass

Highlights:

The increase in size of the fire is due to more accurate mapping, but it hasn’t grown since yesterday. There are internal spots of unburned vegetation that continue to burn and produce smoke. These featured vegetation spots don’t threaten the line of the firewall. Yesterday, the intensity of the fire was minimal and the lines are maintained.

Operations:

Yesterday, firefighters continued neutralization operations to continue securing the Northwest Firewall. In other areas, crews monitored the firework while moving rocks posed a safety hazard. Water spilled by helicopters backed extinguishing efforts along the northeast steep section of the fire where crews cannot access on foot. Crews checked and monitored the remaining perimeter of the fire. Today, neutralization operations will continue on the northwest side of the fire. Water tanks and fire trucks will be used on the northeast end of the fire to pour water into hot areas. Crews will monitor the perimeter of the fire and around structures in the fire area. Aircraft equipment will be used as necessary.

Weather and intensity of the fire:

The flow of ground winds is weak; currents will be light and temperatures will rise. Fuels remain dry and internal fumes of unburned fuel will continue to produce smoke and there is a possibility of flames. Drivers are asked to use caution on Interstate 84 while firefighters and air crews continue to work in the area.

Good morning from the #2024MicrowaveTowerFire

806 acres 53% contained 173 personnel

Strategic firing operations will continue today. Expect to see smoke, and flames maybe visible. We will provide a full update again this morning.

7/26 6:00 pm update:

Firefighters began strategic firing operations last night and continued this work today along the northern edge of the fire. Firing operations are a method of indirect attack, typically used to decrease the fire’s spread. This strategy helps reduce the amount of fuel (vegetation) in the path of the oncoming fire. When conditions are favorable, such as lower temperatures and minimal wind, fire managers consider this tactic to help control wildfire. Crews designate a “control line”, often a natural barrier like a road, where there is a break in fuels in which to begin. Firing operations will continue into tomorrow. Expect to see increased smoke and flames maybe visible.
