Review slams Seattle police response to 2020 protest zone

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle’s inspector general has released a critical review of the city’s response to racial justice protests in 2020. The Seattle Times reports that the review, released Tuesday, found that poor communication, deception, bad judgment and a lack of leadership by the police department and city administration contributed to tension and violence in the eight-block “cop-free” zone known as the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest. Demonstrators created the protest zone after officers abandoned the nearby East Precint in June 2020. The inspector general found department brass misled the public and exaggerated dangers posed by protesters to justify leaving the precinct.
