PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon was one of just six states to gain an additional U.S. House seat following the 2020 census. The new 6th Congressional District encompasses Portland’s affluent southwestern suburbs, the state capital Salem and rural areas in between. While widely viewed as leaning Democratic, Republicans are also eyeing the prize. The GOP is hoping to capitalize on a surge in suburban voters switching their affiliation to the Republican Party. But the issue of abortion could undermine that trend for Republicans, in Oregon’s new district and nationwide more broadly, as experts predict an uptick in Democratic turnout following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
