New York police spend their Sunday morning chasing a seal around town

Well, that’s something you don’t see every day.

Southhampton, New York Town Police spent their Sunday morning chasing a little seal that managed to waddle its way toward a busy street. The New York Post reports that the animal was first spotted near a liquor store and police were immediately summoned.  Fearing for the animal’s safety, officers sprang into action to capture the creature, but they were no match for the slippery seal.

It must have been quite the sight watching a bunch of officers and their cruisers chase after a little seal pup. Thankfully, police were able to wrangle the marine animal and said in a statement, “The animal was detained by patrol officers and taken into custody by the Riverhead Foundation.”

Authorities even managed to snag photos of the epic chase and — by the looks on one of the officer’s faces — they really enjoyed how they spent their Sunday morning.  Then again, seal pups are adorable to begin with and that particular critter was a juvenile harbor seal, which are among the cutest species of seal.

So, where did the baby seal go?  The department stated, “Seal is being evaluated and cared for by the Riverhead foundation and will be released at a future date.”
