WASHINGTON, D.C. – Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after meeting with Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson, who currently serves as a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals:
“President Biden has done his part with a historic Supreme Court nomination, and now it’s time for the Senate to fulfill its own constitutional obligation. Judge Jackson has wowed the nation with her intellect, poise, and thoughtfulness throughout her confirmation hearings this week, and she likewise impressed me in our one-on-one meeting today.
“Judge Jackson will bring much-needed diversity of lived experience and professional background to the Supreme Court. Importantly, she also shares a commitment to defending our founding constitutional values and to ensuring that the law is enforced evenhandedly to serve all of the people.
“The role of a judge is to apply the law impartially, without driving a partisan or ideological agenda. At a time when our nation’s legal system is under assault from special interests seeking to make the rich richer and the powerful more powerful, we need a Justice who will embrace our nation’s founding vision of government of, by, and for the people. I have every confidence that Judge Jackson will be that Justice.”
