Wyden Promises to Advance Legislation to End Permanent Normal Trade Relations And Punish Putin’s Brutal Invasion of Ukraine
Washington, D.C. – Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today praised President Biden’s endorsement for ending Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Russia, following the introduction of bipartisan legislation by Wyden, Ranking Member Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and other congressional leaders.
“Vladimir Putin doesn’t get to tear down the international order, brutalize the Ukrainian people with his unjust war and then benefit from normal trade relations,” Wyden said. “President Biden is right to take every possible economic measure, in concert with our allies, to punish Putin’s regime and ensure he pays a high price for his barbaric actions. I look forward to working with the administration to pass legislation revoking Russia’s Permanent Normal Trade Relations status.”
Revoking Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) will raise tariffs on a range of goods exported by Russia to the United States. The announcement follows President Biden’s action to ban imports of Russian oil and other energy products, as well as harsh sanctions on Putin and his inner circle.
Wyden and Crapo introduced legislation to end PNTR for Russia earlier this week.
