In what sounds like the most bizarre arrest of the year, a Connecticut man was led away in handcuffs after failing to plant trees.
Newtown Daily Voice reports that Joseph Esposito Jr., 53, was allegedly paid $13,000 by a resident of Westport, Connecticut, to buy and plant trees on their property. One problem: Esposito apparently pocketed the money and took off after receiving his pay in November 2021.
Westport Police Lieutenant David Wolf says the complainant made “multiple” requests to get their money back but the deposit never found its way back into their bank account. As for Esposito, he claims he did buy the trees from a nursery and was going to honor his contract.
One issue: He was unable to provide a receipt to prove he bought himself $13,000 worth of trees. He was released on a promise to appear back in court.
