Yanks meet Sox…Remembering ’78…Three-way tie in AFC West

BOSTON (AP) — The baseball playoffs get under way at Boston’s Fenway Park as the longtime rival Red Sox and New York Yankees face each other in the AL wild-card game. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is set to start against ex-Yankee Nathan Eovaldi. The teams both had their high and low points this year before finishing tied at 92-70. The winner will advance to play another division rival, the AL East champion Tampa Bay Rays.

BOSTON (AP) — There’s bound to be a lot of nostalgia tonight in Boston as fans reminisce about the 1978 tiebreaker between the Yankees and Red Sox, highlighted by Bucky Dent’s three-run homer in the seventh inning that propelled New York to a 5-4 win. Reggie Jackson, Carl Yastrzemski and other stars played that afternoon, but what everyone remembers is Dent’s flyball over the Green Monster.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers work out on the West Coast, a day before they meet in the NL wild-card game. It’ll be a marquee matchup: Longtime Cards ace Adam Wainwright against Dodgers midseason acquisition Max Scherzer.

NEW YORK (AP) — The ousted manager of the New York Mets, Luis Rojas, says he knows he’s in a “results-oriented business” — and he says he’s disappointed that the Mets didn’t reach their goals this year. The team declined its option on his contract for 2022, a day after finishing third in the NL East at 77-85 in Steve Cohen’s first year of ownership.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers are now 3-and-1 for the first time since 2014, and they’re part of a three-way tie atop the AFC West with Las Vegas and Denver following last night’s 28-14 win over the Raiders. The loss by Las Vegas leaves the Arizona Cardinals as the NFL’s only undefeated team after four weeks.
