Trespassing subject arrested

On July 3, 2021, the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Simcoe Mountain Road in Centerville, Washington, for a report of a subject trespassing. Deputy Pat Kaley responded and met with Dave West the property owner. Mr. West advised Deputy Kaley he had installed trail cameras on his property and the trail cameras send immediate pictures to Mr. West’s cell phone.

Mr. West advised Deputy Kaley one of the trail cameras had been activated and sent a picture of a male subject trespassing on Mr. West’s property.

Mr. West and Deputy Kaley located Kevin L. Oliver, 28 years old, of Centerville, Washington, lying face down on the ground on Mr. West’s property near where Mr. West had some vehicles parked.

Deputy Kaley ordered Mr. Oliver to put his hands up and get off of the ground. Mr. Oliver refused to cooperate and reached into the waist of his pants. Deputy Kaley pointed his service pistol at Mr. Oliver and warned Mr. Oliver he would shoot him. Mr. Oliver put his hands up, so Deputy Kaley could see he had nothing in his hands. Deputy Kaley moved into a better position to control Mr. Oliver.

Deputy Kaley transitioned from his pistol to his Taser and ordered Mr. Oliver to get down on the ground. Mr. Oliver cussed at Deputy Kaley, refusing to cooperate with Deputy Kaley’s orders. Deputy Kaley had to deploy his Taser to subdue Mr. Oliver, but one of the Taser probes became dislodged. Deputy Kaley attempted to deploy his Taser a second time, but missed the Mr. Oliver.

Deputy Kaley moved in and went hands on with Mr. Oliver, and was able to subdue Mr. Oliver, placing him in handcuffs. Deputy Kaley searched Mr. Oliver’s person incident to the arrest and was found to be in possession of several bank and Quest cards belonging to other people. Mr. Oliver was also found to be in possession of a pill bottle that belonged to Mr. West’s grandson. The pill bottle had been inside of one of the vehicles parked on Mr. West’s property. Deputy Kaley also found a slim-jim and screw driver on his person.

While Deputy Kaley was searching Mr. Oliver, Mr. West spoke with Mr. Oliver about his poor decisions of coming onto his property. Mr. Oliver attempted to headbutt Mr. West and Mr. Oliver was taken to the ground by Deputy Kaley.

Mr. Oliver was transported to the Klickitat Valley Hospital before being booked into the Klickitat County Jail. Mr. Oliver was charged with “Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree”, “Having or Making Burglary Tools”, and “Resisting Arrest”.

Sheriff Songer would like to point out the benefits of property owners placing camera systems on their private property. Having pictures of suspects committing crimes are a great asset for law enforcement and helps with prosecuting suspects of various crimes.

Sheriff Songer wants to commend Deputy Kaley in how he handled himself when dealing with such a difficult suspect.
