Speaker snared in Ohio bribery probe liked to play long game

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio House speaker now accused in a $60 million federal bribery probe plays the long game when it comes to politics. Republican Larry Householder contributed to a months-long impasse at the Statehouse in 2018 that facilitated his later election. In the early 2000s, a fellow Republican leader said Householder chose a powerful labor union over a GOP budget compromise. The 61-year-old Householder is a pragmatic, dealmaker from Appalachia who was widely believed to be positioning to run for governor. Some say deals he’s tried to cut were admirable despite the sometimes aggressive tactics.
