Disturbance Leads To SWAT Response in East Salem

On Monday night, July 20th, 2020, shortly before midnight deputies were called to a disturbance at a home in the 4800 block of Wagon Trail Ct S.E. in the unincorporated area of East Salem. Deputies learned the incident began after the suspect became intoxicated and left his children alone at home.  The suspect’s friends, who live in a nearby residence, grew concerned about the safety of the children so they took them to their home so they would not be left alone.  The incident escalated after the suspect was alleged to have gone into the neighbor’s home while armed with a handgun attempting to get the children back. One of the neighbors is reported to have been struck in the head with a handgun by the suspect after confronting him.

By the time deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect had returned to his own home and was standing in the garage armed with a rifle. The Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and negotiators were called out to assist with resolving the incident. Over the course of multiple hours negotiators attempted to get the suspect the surrender peacefully. After several hours on scene, SWAT team members deployed CS gas into the residence which ultimately led to the suspect’s peaceful surrender.

The male, Nicholas McCain, 29, of Salem was taken into custody for Assault II, Menacing, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Burglary I. McCain was lodged at the Marion County Jail and is scheduled for arraignment on Wendesday, July 22nd, at 2:30 pm at the Marion County Circuit Court Annex.
