Lawsuit claims Kent police violated policy in shooting death

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal civil-rights lawsuit has been filed against two Kent Police Department officers over the shooting death of 20-year-old Giovonn Joseph-McDade following a police pursuit in 2017. His parents filed the lawsuit on Friday that says officers William Davis and Matthew Rausch violated department policy by failing to balance the severity of the traffic violation with the threat a chase might pose to the public. Police say they pursued Joseph-McDade when he drove from an attempted traffic stop. The Times reported that Davis said the driver accelerated toward him before Davis opened fire. Kent Police did not return a call seeking comment.
