UW Medicine furloughs 1,500 staffers, with more possible

SEATTLE (AP) — UW Medicine has announced furloughs due to the coronavirus pandemic in spite of its position at the forefront of COVID-19 local and global efforts. Last week CEO Dr. Paul Ramsey announced a $500 million budget shortfall tied to the pandemic. On Monday, UW Medicine officials announced one- to eight-week furloughs for 1,500 professional staff at the Seattle-based health care system. The Seattle Times reports most of UW Medicine’s financial trouble is from a loss of revenue from elective surgeries. Elective work is set to slowly begin this week.
