Death toll from attack on Kabul maternity clinic rises to 24

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Officials have raised the death toll from a militant attack on a maternity hospital in Afghanistan’s capital to 24, including young mothers, nurses and two newborns. One infant was treated for injuries and 20 were under medical observation Wednesday, swaddled in blankets in hospital cribs. Militants had stormed the hospital in a Shiite neighborhood of the capital Tuesday morning, setting off an hours-long shootout with the police. As the battle raged, Afghan security forces carried out babies and frantic young mothers. The hospital targeted in the attack is supported by the international group Doctors Without Borders.
