Senator Murray Announces Federal Funding to Support Housing Assistance in Washington State in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $6,259,690 million for Tenant-Based Rental Assistance from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, And Economic Security (CARES) Act that is being distributed to Public Housing Authorities across Washington state to administer the Housing Choice Voucher program and help vulnerable Washingtonians remain in safe, secure housing during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

“So many families across our state are struggling to keep a roof over their heads during this pandemic, and I’m going to keep fighting in the Senate to get Washingtonians the federal assistance they need to help their families stay safe, healthy, and secure while we all wait out this pandemic,” Senator Murray said.

This funding comes as part of the $1.25 billion in Tenant-Based Rental Assistance and $7 billion in total assistance for affordable housing and homelessness assistance programs that Senator Murray fought to include in the CARES Act. Specifically, these awards will be distributed through the Housing Choice Voucher program to public housing authorities across the state and country to assist very low-income families, elderly individuals, and people with disabilities in acquiring and maintaining safe, stable housing. This past March, Senator Murray also pushed Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson to provide Public Housing Authorities with the resources and information that they need to safely and effectively do their jobs during this pandemic.
