Virus prompts Portland State University to lay off 106

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland State University is laying off 106 employees to help reduce the financial impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Oregon Public Broadcasting reports university interim president Stephen Percy said Friday the hope is the employees can return to work by late September. Percy says PSU is losing $13 million “as a result of the actions taken to combat COVID-19.” The 106 employees will retain their benefits during the layoff. Other Oregon universities have announced staffing changes as a result of COVID-19 financial impacts. The University of Oregon previously announced 282 employee layoffs. The Higher Education Coordinating Commission estimates Oregon’s public colleges could lose some $130 million this spring.
