Listen: The Dalles City Council April 27, 2020

The Dalles City Council met yesterday in a meeting that was held internally on Zoom but the invitation was not sent to the general public. who could watch the meeting but could not join or make any comment. Councilors authorized a $333,000 expenditure to add barriers to prevent drivers from turning left onto West Second from Cherry Heights Road, he scene of a number of accidents.

Other items on the agenda include lease revisions on airport property in Dallesport for Pacific City Cherry Producers, and an ordinance granting a nonexclusive franchise for GorgeNet to build a test fiber-optic project on 450 homes south of The Dalles High School.

GorgeNet recently merged with Eastern Oregon Telephone out of Hermiston .under a parent company, Blue Mountain Nettworks. President Joe Franell told the council they were asking for the franchise for the purpose of building a 450-home, fiber-to-the-home test to see if a there is market for fiber to the home ultra high speed broadband in The Dalles. He said that would mean a gigabit per second both downloading and uploading.

Councilors commented that under some current networks, internet use has been so heavy since the shelter-in-place order was announced, that it’s caused major drops in speed. The vote to pass an ordinance granting a franchise was unanimous.
