WWII veteran, age 99, raises millions for UK health service

LONDON (AP) — A 99-year-old British veteran who started a humble campaign to thank the National Health Service has surprised himself by raising millions of pounds. Tom Moore’s family helped him start raising funds for health workers during the coronavirus pandemic as a way to the thank doctors and nurses who treated his broken hip. Moore plans to complete 100 laps of his 25-meter garden before he turns 100 on April 30. His fundraiser had an initial goal of 1,000 pounds, but found no shortage of willing donors at a time of national crisis. Within days, it attracted more than 250,000 supporters pledging more than 6 million pounds, or $7.5 million.
