U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary and U.S. Census Bureau Director Statement on 2020 Census Operational Adjustments Due to COVID-19

The Census Bureau is taking steps to reactivate field operations beginning June 1, 2020. Field operations were temporarily suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In-person activities, including all interaction with the public, office work and processing activities, will incorporate the most current guidance to promote the health and safety of staff and the public. This will include recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) and social distancing practices.

If you haven’t yet responded to the 2020 Census online or by phone, you will get a reminder and a paper questionnaire in your mailbox this week.

As of today, the response rate in Oregon is 51.3 percent. Washington County is leading the state at 59.8 percent and Gilliam County is at 9.3 percent of the households that have responded.  The national response rate is 48.1 percent. (Hyperlink shows map of localized response rates updated daily.)

Responding now to the 2020 Census by mail, on the phone or online will minimize the need for a census taker to follow up and visit in person later this year. More information at https://www.census.gov/
