Virus puts UK PM in intensive care; US top doctor hopeful

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spent the night in intensive care in London and was receiving oxygen as he fought the coronavirus. Japan declared a monthlong state of emergency for Tokyo and six other regions. Authorities in New York and elsewhere in Europe were hoping that a leveling off of deaths and hospitalizations signaled that the pandemic’s two new epicenters were turning a corner. And the U.S. surgeon general said that if Americans continue to practice social distancing for the rest of April, a sense of normalcy could return. China reported no deaths over the past 24 hours for the first time since it began publishing statistics on the disease.
