California was the peril and the promise for Kamala Harris’ presidential ambitions, which have ended with the suspension of her campaign. But Harris’ footing in the state was never as solid as it could have been. The senator won three statewide elections, which offered a treasure trove of celebrity support, campaign cash and convention delegates. But one by one, politically active celebrities lined up behind Harris’ rivals while many of the state’s energized progressive activists lent their passion and small-dollar donations to Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders. Harris told staff and supporters Tuesday she simply didn’t have the money to stay in the race.
