Things could get interesting tomorrow as the Columbia River Gorge Commission meets at the Discovery Center in The Dalles. The meeting opens at 9 am with a highly contested hearing involving an open gravel pit operating inside the National Scenic Area east of Washougal.
The operation was grandfathered in under a permit granted in the 1970s when the National Scenic Area Act was passed in 1986, but it stopped operation for 10 years. When operations resumed, neighbors who object to as many as 200 gravel trucks a day entering and leaving the site plus noise and dust problems say the mine poses a safety and health threat.
The hearing is scheduled for three hours starting at 9 am. The public is welcome to attend the open meeting.
