Wyden Statement on GAO Study on Lost Tobacco Tax Revenue

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement on a GAO study on lost tobacco tax revenue:

“Tobacco tax loopholes continue to cost the government billions—$1.3 billion over just four years. This is an easy fix. Pipe tobacco should be taxed at the same rates as roll-your-own tobacco. Tobacco taxes fund critical priorities like cancer research and children’s health care, so there’s no reason this shouldn’t get done.”
