Providence Sports Medicine, the Oregon Sports Authority, and Positive Coaching Alliance have partnered to offer a free community workshop event at Hood River Valley High School on Wednesday April 24th. The event, “Girls On Track: Exploring the Positive Power of Sports for Girls & Women”, aims to bring girls and their parents, coaches, and teachers together to discuss the positive power of sports participation at any level, and explore ways to create more inclusive, inviting, and rewarding sports experiences for female athletes. The evening event will feature professional soccer player Kendall Johnson, who has played 6 years professionally in the National Women’s Soccer League and overseas and won an NWSL Championship with the Portland Thorns. Positive Coaching Alliance will lead an interactive break-out session for youth to explore positive athlete development while an engaging panel discussion will be held for adults; featuring voices from sports medicine, youth program development, education, and more. Girls in 3rd through 9th grade interested in any sport, as well as their parents, coaches, and teachers, are particularly encouraged to attend.
Inspired by the 45th anniversary of Title IX legislation in 2017, the Oregon Sports Authority and Providence Sports Medicine launched “Girls on Track”-an initiative to raise awareness of the disproportionate rate at which girls drop out of sports compared to boys, and to honor strong females and their accomplishments in sports through events and programming. Oregon Sports Authority also operates the TrackTown Youth League, sponsored by Providence Sports Medicine. The TrackTown Youth League is a seasonal series of free all-comer track meets across Oregon for youth ages 7-14, including an annual meet at Hood River Valley High School. The league is popular with both returners and newcomers, and provides a unique opportunity for youth of all experience levels, including adaptive athletes, to learn and compete side-by-side. The 2019 TrackTown Youth League meet in Hood River will be held on Saturday May 4th.
