Suspect in fatal stabbing to appear in court

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A court manager says the suspect in a Spokane homicide refused to appear before a judge on Friday but is likely to appear on Monday.

The Spokesman-Review reports bond was set at $1 million for Joseph Scheel.

The county medical examiner says the victim, Edna Patricia Hernandez, died from multiple stab wounds.

Court documents say Scheel was in a relationship with Hernandez.

Hernandez checked herself into the emergency room on March 28 after being thrown out of a car, she told staff, but later changed her story and said she fell out of the car.

On April 2, a coworker called police to request a welfare check on Hernandez when she did not show up to work.

Deputies went to the apartment but Scheel refused to open the door.

Hernandez was found dead with an apparent stab wounds.
