It’s International Women’s Day and a free event, titled, “Balance for Better: How gender-balanced leadership can improve our communities and our world,” is scheduled for this afternoon from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hood River County Library. It is hosted by Soroptimist International of Hood River and the Library and is sponsored by Copper West Real Estate. Jamie McLeod-Skinner, the Democratic 2018 candidate for US House of Representatives, Oregon District 2, will be the keynote speaker and participate in a panel discussion on gender-balanced leadership’s effect on our workplaces, our local communities and the world. Members of the panel will include Dr. Marta Yera Cronin, President, Columbia Gorge Community College; Jessica Metta, Executive Director, Gorge Technology Alliance and Hood River City Council member; Jeanie Vieira, RN, CEO, Providence Hood River; Christina Mercer, Director of Strategy, Insitu and Anna Williams, Oregon District 52 Representative and college instructor.
It’s the 7th Annual “Run Like a Dog” event, inviting all runners, walkers and 4-legged friends to join them in North Bonneville Saturday from 9 to 10 am for a 5K fundraiser walk/run loop on the trails of Strawberry Island in the beautiful Columbia Gorge. This fundraising event benefits the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society. $10 suggested donation, and 100 percent of the proceeds they collect in the donation jar will go to the West Columbia Gorge Humane Society And no, you don’t have to bring a dog to participate with them.
The Second Saturday of each month the WAAAM Air and Auto Museum opens the doors to roll out and run some of its antique airplanes and cars. Visitors watch airplane operations up close and may get to ride in old cars too. Open 9-5. Activities 10-2. Free parking. WAAAM is located three miles from downtown Hood River at 1600 Air Museum Road, Hood River.
The Dalles Eagles Auxilery is holding a Bazaar Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm at the Eagles Lodge, 2006 W 7th Street, with food, jewelry, makeup, antiques, crafts, and more. There will be a soup lunch available for $10 a plate.
The Next Door will be unveiling a new mural Saturday at their building at 10th and Kelly which formerly housed the Mid-Columbia Council of Governments. Open house from 11 am to 1 pm with snacks, beverages, kids activities, special guest speakers, and a tribute to Celilo Falls.
The Rockford Grange at 4262 Barrett Dr in Hood River hosts its 6th annual seed share event Saturday from 1 to 5 pm. Free seeds available to home gardeners. All non-GMO and many locally adapted heirloom varieties available. Bring your extra seeds if you have them, and connect with other local gardeners. Information and expert advice about seed starting and seed saving. Kids activities and refreshments available.
Historic photos and family stories about a Japanese farming settlement in Mosier area in the early 20th century will be featured Saturday at the Original Wasco County Courthouse, 410 W. 2nd Place, The Dalles. The program begins at 1:30 in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 building. There is a TV monitor to the downstairs sheriff’s office to accommodate those unable to climb the stairs. The program was postponed due to weather and road conditions last month. It will be presented by Dave Wilson, Mayerdale history researcher. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Coffee and cookies will be served after the program.
