Klickitat County Sheriff Bob Songer’s stance that Initiative 1639 is unconstitutional and that he is not going to enforce it has brought national and international attention.
He appeared on the Alex Jones Show, a right-wing conspiracy-minded host, whose audience fell from 1.5 million to 750,000 after he was largely banned in August from YouTube and Facebook. (New York Times article on Alex Jones LINK)
Songer also was the main focus of an article in the US edition of the Manchester, England-based newspaper The Guardian, which has a circulation of 136,000. Other county sheriffs echoed Songer’s stance including Ferry county Sheriff Ray Maycumber, told the Guardian that he would not be enforcing the laws either, at least until litigation by the National Rifle Association challenging the measure is completed. The newspaper noted that 27 of Washington’s 39 counties including Klickitat, Skamania and Yakima counties rejected the ballot measure. (LINK to map of I-1639 voting)
