Washington state man pleads not guilty in deadly shooting

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A Washington state man accused of a deadly shooting outside an apartment in Lakewood has pleaded not guilty.

The News Tribune reports 21-year-old Curtis Davis IV entered his not guilty plea Thursday to charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter in the death of 18-year-old Rodney Chandler.

According to court documents, the two men and a third person were drinking outside an apartment Wednesday.

Neighbors told police they saw two people arguing and preparing to fight.

According to the documents, Davis called 911 and told dispatchers he heard two gunshots and found Chandler bleeding. He told police Chandler shot himself.

He later told police that Chandler fired upon him so he returned fire.

Police found multiple shell casings from both guns as well as several bullet holes in the walls.
