Prosecutors clear Yakima police officer in kicking teen

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Prosecutors have declined to pursue criminal charges against a Yakima police officer who used pepper spray on a teen and knocked him down while breaking up a fight.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports Yakima County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Brusic says in letter Tuesday that Officer Ian Cole acted in a reasonable manner after the 17-year-old boy refused orders to get on the ground.

The officer had kicked the teen at the Central Washington State Fair last month. Brusic says the officer “reasonably believed he had to utilize this push kick” to quickly resolution the situation.

Attorney Bill Pickett, who is representing the teen in a complaint against the city, claims the officer displayed “abusive and unacceptable conduct by an officer.”
