ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — A school district near San Francisco has become the latest to adopt a dress code allowing midriff-baring shirts and short shorts that it says is less sexist.
Students and teachers who drafted the policy in the small city of Alameda say the old code focused unfairly on girls.
The changes reflect a generational shift that students and teachers say was partly influenced by broader conversations on gender and a national resurgence of student activism.
Similar policies were put in place in the past two years in Portland, Oregon and Evanston, Illinois.
