Western State Hospital patient accused of attacking worker

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Prosecutors say a Western State Hospital patient attacked a staff member and stomped on her head at least eight times at the facility near Tacoma.

The News Tribune reports the 19-year-old man was charged Tuesday in Pierce County with first-degree and third-degree assault following the Sunday attack.

According to charging documents, the man punched the staff member from behind and knocked her to the ground, later stomping on her head.

Officers described the woman’s face and head injuries as “significant,” but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

The man was committed to Western State Hospital after assaulting a law enforcement officer in King County last year. He was found incompetent to stand trial in February, resulting in the dismissal of the criminal charges.
