Final report on Squally Point Fire

Issued 6:01 pm Wednesday J>uly 25

[The Dalles, Ore.] Overnight firefighters continued to mop-up the Squally Point Fire, located four miles northwest of The Dalles.  The fire was 100% contained yesterday at 5:00 p.m. Crews worked today systematically gridding the fire area looking for heat and flames, using water to douse hot spots and reduce risk of the fire rekindling.  Fire managers expect to reach full control tonight at 6:00 p.m.  The fire will be placed in patrol status beginning Thursday and firefighters will continue to monitor the fire until it is declared out.

Personnel on the fire today included a twenty person crew, one engine from the Oregon Department of Forestry, and an engine and a tender from Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, as well as overhead to manage the suppression actions.

Today firefighters were able to use a GPS unit to map the fire perimeter.  The final acreage was calculated at 25.5 acres.  This correction is due to better mapping not fire growth.

The investigation determined the cause of the fire to be a mechanical failure on a semi-truck traveling along Interstate 84.
