Police: Missing 2-year-old, father believed dead in Virginia

NEW YORK (AP) — New York police say a 2-year-old Long Island boy and the father suspected of abducting him are believed dead in Virginia.

Suffolk County police said they are awaiting confirmation that the bodies found Wednesday in a vehicle in Rockbridge County, Virginia are Jovani Ligurgo and his father, John.

They said the vehicle has the same license plate as Ligurgo’s Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Jovani’s mother alerted police on Tuesday after Ligurgo failed to drop the boy off at a prearranged time.

Suffolk police requested an Amber Alert, but New York State Police said they didn’t give enough information to meet the criteria for one.

Amber Alerts are issued only when there’s evidence that an abducted child is in serious danger.

Police said they suspected Ligurgo possessed a hunting rifle.
