Thanks to a grant from PacificSource, the LINK Transportation Network will be offering free public transportation to The Dalles Farmers’ Market all season. “We saw this as a great opportunity to get more people riding the bus and help everyone access the healthy local fruits and vegetables at the market,” said Amanda Hoey, Executive Director of Mid-Columbia Economic Development District (MCEDD). MCEDD assumed operation of the LINK in February 2018 from the prior operating entity, Mid-Columbia Council of Governments (MCCOG). The LINK currently provides Dial-a-Ride, door-to-door public transit within the City of The Dalles and select areas of Wasco County, reaching as far as Mosier, Dufur and Celilo Village. Since taking over operation, MCEDD has been looking for ways to increase this vital public service to the community.
“The LINK has historically only operated Monday through Friday. We recently increased weekday hours to run from 7am to 6pm, but the PacificSource grant will allow us to operate on Saturdays for the first time,” added Amanda. “It’s a big deal.” The Dalles Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday from June 2 through October 13, 9am to 1pm. Anyone and everyone in The Dalles is welcome to ride the LINK to the market.
To ride, call the LINK at 541-296-7595 to request a pick-up time and location. For best availability, schedule rides at least one day before. The LINK then picks up riders at their door and brings them to The Dalles Farmers’ Market. Riders can stock up on delicious local fruits, vegetables and more while enjoying live music and the fun community atmosphere. Then the LINK takes riders home or to their location of choice. This transportation is offered completely free thanks to PacificSource.
Also important to note are incentives The Dalles Farmers’ Market and Gorge Grown Food Network nonprofits offer to help lower-income families access the healthy food at the market. Incentives include a $10 SNAP Match where SNAP EBT shoppers receive up to an extra $10 when they use their benefits at the Farmers’ Market. The Farmers’ Market also accepts WIC and Senior Farmers Market Vouchers, Veggie Rx, debit and credit cards. Additionally, the Power of Produce program provides a free $2 token to the first 60 kids ages 3 to 16 to purchase fruits or veggies at the market.
