Bend man arrested in killing of swan near Sunriver

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police arrested a Bend man accused of shooting a trumpeter swan near Sunriver last Thanksgiving.

Sunriver police said Tuesday that 23-year old Jordan Dupuis faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful taking of a prohibited species. Trumpeter swans are a protected species in Oregon, and hunting them is illegal.

The swan named Chuck had been placed at Lake Aspen as part of a breeding program to reintroduce trumpeter swans in the area. He was found injured on the Deschutes River and had to be euthanized.

KTVZ and The Bulletin newspaper report that an anonymous tip led police to the suspect. The Sunriver Nature Center previously announced a $4,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
