Ex-boyfriend of missing Oregon woman dies in jail suicide

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say the ex-boyfriend of an Oregon woman who disappeared last month has died from a suicide attempt at a county jail.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel said 31-year-old Bryan Penner died Monday at a Bend hospital. The cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation.

Penner had been taken to a hospital Sunday night after deputies and a jail nurse began life-saving efforts.

Penner’s ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Sara Gomez, was last seen Feb. 19. Penner was arrested two days later, accused of violating the restraining order Gomez took out against him. He pleaded not guilty to charges of contempt of court.

Hummel says Penner was the sole suspect in Gomez’s disappearance.
