BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — Health officials are advising people to avoid contact with the inlet water near Bremerton after untreated sewage was spilled.
The Kitsap Sun reports the advisory from the Kitsap Public Health District comes after 1,000 gallons of sewage entered the Sinclair Inlet between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
Officials say an open valve at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility caused the sewage to spill out of a holding tank and into a utility area at Dry Dock 6. The waste then flowed through a drainage pipe and into the body of water.
The advisory is in effect through Friday.
Authorities are investigating what caused the valve to open.
