SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The new ice skating ribbon in Spokane’s Riverfront Park is out of commission because of an ammonia leak.
The Spokane Parks Department says the $10 million feature will be closed until a replacement part can arrive from Toronto, a process that could take three weeks.
The ribbon has been closed since Saturday night after workers discovered the leak. The chemical is used in the ice-making process.
The Spokesman-Review says the city may extend the skating season as a result of the outage. Ice skating was scheduled to end March 4.
The ribbon opened in December and has been very popular. It is located in Riverfront Park, which was created as the site for the 1974 World’s Fair.
