Klickitat County Search and Rescue basic training starts January 16

On Tuesday, January 16, 2018, the Klickitat County Search & Rescue Volunteers and the Klickitat County Sheriff‘s Office will begin the biannual Klickitat County Search & Rescue Basic Training Academy. The 2018 academy training will take place over 12 weeks, from January 10th thru April 8th and include over 75 hours of training and testing. The academy is one of the first steps in becoming a mission qualified search and rescue volunteer.

We will begin the academy with classroom training at 6:30 pm on Tuesday January 16, at the PUD meeting room, 1313 South Columbus, Goldendale. The academy will consist of classroom presentations from the SAR Skills text book, handouts, practical field training, take home exercises, a
final written exam and practical field demonstration testing and overnight.

Training subjects will include land navigation, rescue & evacuation, SAR team survival, lost person behavior, communications, incident command orientation and support, search techniques, helicopter operation along with many others. Upon completion of the academy the SAR volunteer will be mission qualified and ready to respond not only to Klickitat County SAR missions but also requests for mutual aid from other counties in Washington and Oregon.

After basic training requirements are met, volunteers are encouraged to further their training and knowledge in areas of interest to them so that highly trained, specialized teams are available when needed. Specialized areas include, but are not limited to: tracking, rope rescue, water rescue, K-9, air search, communications, mounted equestrian team, logistics and Incident Command support.

SAR volunteerism is for those who are here for one reason: to help those who so desperately need it. As the international SAR moto states “This we do so others may live.”
