Officer injured while assisting at fatal Portland crash

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say one person died in a crash on Interstate 5 and a police officer who stopped to help was injured when a car slammed into a patrol vehicle.

The Portland Police Bureau says the initial crash between a car and a pickup happened Sunday night near the Interstate Bridge. Sgt. Chris Burley says a Ford Focus later crashed into the patrol vehicle of two officers who responded.

One officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries not considered life-threatening. The other officer did not require medical transport.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
