Woman found dead in southeast Portland; man arrested

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland police say officers have arrested a man after finding a woman dead at a southeast Portland apartment complex.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports officers went to Alderwood Court Apartments to check on a resident early Monday.

Sgt. Chris Burley says a woman’s family said her husband assaulted her late Sunday or early Monday and they hadn’t heard from her.

Burley says Portland Police Bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded after the man would not cooperate with officers.

Several apartments were evacuated while residents were told to shelter in place and a nearby elementary school closed.

Police say 28-year-old Robert L. West of Portland was taken into custody Monday morning. When officers entered the apartment, they found the woman dead.

The woman’s cause of death is not known.
